De Imaginibus, On Images or more loosely; How to Make AstrologicalTalismans, has been generally accepted as the work of Thabit Ibn Qurra, the 9thcentury Harranian sage. It was translated into Latin in the twelfth century byJohn of Seville, noted translator of astrological and astronomical works, as partof the great medieval translation project that brought the intellectual riches ofthe high Islamic culture of the Middle East, the inheritor of the classical Greektradition, into Europe. We are currently engaged in another great translationproject in which the fruits of the European esoteric tradition, long locked awayin Latin and in manuscripts, are being translated into the modern lingua francaof English. This book is a small, but hopefully useful part of this new receptionof ancient esoterica. This translation of De Imaginibus was done from the Latincritical edition of Francis Carmody, in The Astronomical Works of Thabit b.Qurra (UCal Press, 1960) at 167-97 and includes two similar, but differentversions which Carmody referred to as Versions I & J.
